It Was There All Along

Thomas is remembered as the doubter.

Peter is remembered for sinking.

But I wonder if we’ve misunderstood their stories.

Thomas wasn’t only a doubter.

He became one of the disciples who boldly proclaimed the risen Christ.

Peter didn’t only sink.

He was the only disciple who had the courage to step out of the boat in the first place.

Perhaps what God intended to reveal was already there all along.

Isn’t that true of so many of us?

We ask God for courage while He’s uncovering the courage He’s already placed within us.

We pray for faith, not realizing every trial is revealing the faith we didn’t know we possessed.

We ask God to show us who we are while He’s patiently removing everything that keeps us from seeing ourselves through His eyes.

One of my favorite lines comes from Amazing Grace:

“I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.”

Maybe the miracle wasn’t that God created something new.

Maybe He removed the blindness.

When our spiritual eyes are opened, we stop defining ourselves by our weakest moment.

Thomas becomes more than his doubt.

Peter becomes more than his failure.

And we become more than our past.

God has always seen what we could not.

He doesn’t see us as we were.

He sees us as we are becoming.

Sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t receiving something you’ve never had.

It’s finally seeing what God placed inside you all along.

“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face…” — 1 Corinthians 13:12

Perhaps you’ve never lacked what you needed. Perhaps you’ve simply been asking God to open your eyes to what He’s already placed within you.
