Meet my two companions, Harley and Bear.
Harley is a Labrador and German Shepherd mix. She’s loyal, protective, and has been faithfully by my family’s side for years.
Then there’s Bear.
Bear wasn’t supposed to be my dog.
One day he wandered into my yard as a stray and quietly decided he wasn’t leaving. I called animal control, but no one ever came.
Then something happened I’ll never forget.
In my backyard stands a fifteen-foot cross.
For three days, Bear made his bed at the foot of that cross.
Not beneath a tree.
Not on the porch.
Not in the shade.
At the foot of the cross.
He could have chosen anywhere in the yard…
But that’s where he stayed.
I don’t know where Bear came from or what roads he had traveled before he found us.
Maybe he had been abandoned.
Maybe he’d spent days wondering where he belonged.
Maybe he was simply tired of wandering.
All I know is that somehow…
he knew he’d found home.
The older I get, the more I realize we’re not all that different.
We spend so much of our lives wandering.
Searching for acceptance.
Looking for peace.
Hoping someone will choose us.
Trying to earn a place where we belong.
Then one day…
we find ourselves at the foot of the cross.
And everything changes.
Because that’s where grace meets us.
That’s where shame loses its voice.
That’s where wandering ends.
That’s where strangers become sons and daughters.
Bear may have found my yard by accident.
But I don’t believe he rested at the foot of that cross by accident.
God has a way of using ordinary moments to tell extraordinary stories.
Sometimes He even sends a dog to remind us that the safest place we’ll ever find…
is at the foot of the cross.
Because home isn’t always the place where you started.
Sometimes…
it’s the place where you’re finally loved enough to stay.
