Prompt: What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?

This is impossible to answer with just one place.

For me, it’s a tie—and every one of them is in Houston, Texas.

The first is a little undiscovered gem called TailWinks. If you know, you know. They serve one of the most incredible breakfasts I’ve ever had. I don’t know if the owners are Greek, but those pancakes… they’re unforgettable. Light, fluffy, and the kind of meal that makes you slow down and savor every bite. Just talking about them, I can almost smell them.

Next is District 7 Grill, the downtown location on Main Street. Their Mexican street corn soup is absolutely amazing. Rich, creamy, with just the right amount of spice—it was one of those dishes that makes you pause after the first spoonful because it’s that good. Thinking about it now makes my mouth water.

Then there’s El Bolillo Bakery. Walking through the doors is an experience all by itself. The aroma of fresh bread and pastries welcomes you before anyone says hello. Their sweet potato empanadas are incredible, and those wedding cookies… I can close my eyes and imagine I’m standing there all over again.

And finally, The Original Kolache Shoppe. Their kolaches are soft, buttery pastries filled with savory meats that practically melt in your mouth. Pair one with a fresh cup of coffee, and you’ve got the perfect start to the day.

So no, I can’t choose just one.

What I remember most isn’t simply the food. It’s how Houston made a little girl from South Georgia feel at home.

There’s something beautiful about that.

Food has a way of bringing people together. It tells the story of a city, its culture, and the people who lovingly prepare each meal. Long after I’ve forgotten the directions or the hotel room, I still remember the taste of those pancakes, the warmth of that soup, the sweetness of those empanadas, and the comfort of a fresh kolache.

Sometimes the best part of traveling isn’t just seeing a new place. It’s finding a table where you feel like you belong.
