Being Loved vs Being Kept Around

Being Loved vs. Being Kept Around

There is a difference between being loved and being kept around.

And sometimes the hardest part is realizing that you’ve been mistaking one for the other.

Being loved feels like intention.

Being kept around feels like convenience.

When someone loves you, they make room for you in their life. They don’t just reach for you when they’re lonely, bored, or need something. They consider you when they make decisions. They communicate. They show up. They want to know what you need, not just what you can give them.

Love doesn’t leave you constantly wondering where you stand.

Being kept around is different.

It’s the occasional phone call that keeps the connection alive without actually moving the relationship forward.

It’s “I miss you” without “I want to build with you.”

It’s enough attention to keep you from leaving, but never enough intention to make you feel secure.

And that’s a dangerous place to live.

Because crumbs can look like a meal when you’re hungry for love.

Sometimes a person doesn’t want to lose you, but they also don’t want to fully choose you.

They want access without accountability.

Your presence without commitment.

Your love without the responsibility of loving you well.

And eventually, you have to ask yourself:

Am I being loved, or am I simply being kept available?

Because you deserve more than being someone’s backup plan.

You deserve to be intentionally chosen.

Not someone they call when nothing else worked out.

Not someone they keep on the shelf in case they change their mind.

Not someone they love just enough to keep you from loving yourself enough to leave.

Real love has movement.

It grows.

It communicates.

It makes plans.

It takes responsibility.

It doesn’t require you to constantly interpret someone’s behavior to figure out whether you matter.

And perhaps one of the greatest acts of self-love is recognizing when someone’s “I don’t want to lose you” really means:

“I don’t want you, but I don’t want anyone else to have you either.”

That’s not love.

That’s possession.

And you were never created to be kept.

You were created to be intentionally chosen, cherished, respected, and loved.

So don’t confuse someone’s fear of losing access to you with their desire to build a life with you.

There is a profound difference between someone who wants to keep you and someone who wants to keep choosing you
