My best tip for budget travel is simple: replan and prepare months in advance. Set a budget, know what you want to spend, and start watching prices early.
Now, I’m not going to tell you that this works every single time. But when it comes to our yearly trip to Destin, I’ve learned a few things along the way.
We usually stay for a week, and I love renting a house rather than staying in a hotel. One thing I’ve noticed is that the closer we get to our travel date, sometimes the better the rental deals become. Owners would rather fill those houses than let them sit empty, especially around the holidays, so you can occasionally find some really beautiful places for less than you expected.

And then there’s lunch.
There’s a Mexican grocery store/taqueria that I like to stop at when we’re coming into Destin. It’s not fancy—and that’s exactly why I like it. Give me authentic food over a restaurant with a fancy menu any day. I’m still trying to remember the exact name of the place I’m thinking of, but if you find it, please try the lamb. Trust me. One of the things I’ve learned about traveling is that you don’t have to spend money on every experience. Sometimes the best parts of a vacation are the little discoveries—the local grocery store, the hole-in-the-wall restaurant, the house you almost didn’t book, or sitting around the rental with your family after a long day at the beach.
Budget travel doesn’t have to mean missing out.
It means being intentional about where you spend your money so you have more of it to spend on what matters.
And for me, that’s always been the memories.
Because I don’t just want to visit Destin.
I want to keep making memories there.
