Grief Is Love That Has Nowhere to Go
Someone once said,
“Grief is unexpressed love.”
The more I’ve lived, the more I believe there is truth in those words.
Grief isn’t just about death.
It’s about love.
It’s the phone call you can no longer make.
The chair that sits empty at the table.
The birthday card you’ll never sign.
The recipe you wish you had written down.
The stories you long to hear just one more time.
Grief exists because love existed first.
If we had never loved…
we would never grieve.
That’s why grief is such a strange companion.
It reminds us of what we’ve lost, but it also reminds us of how deeply we were blessed to have loved at all.
The tears we cry are not signs of weakness.
They are evidence that someone mattered.
That a relationship mattered.
That a life mattered.
We spend so much time asking when grief will end.
But grief isn’t something we conquer.
It’s something we learn to carry.
Not because it becomes lighter…
but because love teaches our hearts how to make room for both joy and sorrow.
The ache never completely disappears.
Instead, it quietly changes shape.
Some days it arrives with tears.
Other days it arrives with a smile because something reminds us of the one we miss.
A favorite song.
The smell of fresh bread.
A familiar laugh in someone else.
A photograph tucked inside an old Bible.
Love has a way of finding us in ordinary moments.
For those of us who have faith, grief is not the end of the story.
Scripture reminds us that we do not grieve as those who have no hope.
Our tears are real.
Our loss is real.
But so is the promise that death does not have the final word.
One day, every goodbye spoken in Christ will become a joyful hello.
Until then…
Love them by remembering them.
Honor them by living well.
Speak their names.
Tell their stories.
Cook their recipes.
Plant the flowers they loved.
Laugh at the memories that still make you smile.
Because grief is not the absence of love.
It is love that continues long after someone is gone.
Perhaps that’s one of God’s quiet mercies.
Love refuses to disappear simply because someone is no longer here.
It lives on in recipes passed from one generation to the next.
In stories shared around the dinner table.
In traditions faithfully kept.
In prayers whispered through tears.
In the values they planted that continue to bear fruit long after they’re gone.
Death may separate us for a season…
but love keeps reminding us that this isn’t the end of the story.
One day, faith will become sight.
Every tear will be wiped away.
Every goodbye will become hello.
And until that day…
we remember.
We give thanks.
We keep loving.
Because that is what love has always done.
