Hinds’ Feet for High Places
When I think of Hinds’ Feet on High Places, my mind always wanders to the little book of Habakkuk.
It is only three chapters long.
Yet within those few pages is one of the greatest journeys of faith ever recorded.
Habakkuk begins with questions.
“Lord, where are You?”
“Why does evil seem to prosper?”
“How long must I wait?”
They are the same questions many of us have whispered when life stopped making sense.
What I love most is that God never rebukes Habakkuk for asking.
Instead…
He teaches him to trust.
By the end of the book, Habakkuk’s circumstances haven’t changed.
The hardship is still there.
The uncertainty remains.
The fig tree still doesn’t blossom.
The vines still produce no grapes.
Nothing around him looks different.
Yet everything within him has changed.
His confidence is no longer anchored in what he sees.
It is anchored in the God who sees what he cannot.
Then come these remarkable words:
“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines… yet I will rejoice in the Lord.”
That…
is faith.
Not faith because everything is going well.
Faith because God is still God when nothing is going well.
Then comes my favorite verse.
“The Sovereign Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to tread on the heights.”
— Habakkuk 3:19
I’ve often thought about that image.
A deer doesn’t stand confidently on the mountaintop because the mountain is easy.
It stands there because its feet were created for places that would make others stumble.
Every step…
carefully placed.
Balanced.
Sure.
Confident.
Not because the mountain became less dangerous…
but because the deer was designed for it.
Maybe that’s what God has been doing in us all along.
Perhaps He doesn’t always remove the mountain.
Perhaps He changes our footing.
He gives us strength where we once felt weak.
Balance where we once felt unsteady.
Endurance where we once wanted to quit.
Faith where fear once lived.
Maybe the high places aren’t destinations at all.
Maybe they’re the places where we finally discover we were never climbing alone.
The God who called us upward…
was strengthening our feet with every step.
Perhaps that’s why we survive mountains we never imagined we could climb.
Not because the path became easier.
But because somewhere along the journey…
God gave us hinds’ feet.
Don’t pray for an easier mountain. Pray for the feet to faithfully climb the one God has called you to.
