The Promise I Kept
The promise I made to myself was simple:
To be happy in the now.
For years, I spent too much time looking behind me.
Wondering what could have been.
Replaying the what ifs.
Holding onto the hope that people would become who I believed they could be instead of accepting who they had already shown me they were.
I don’t live there anymore.
I’ve learned that the past is a wonderful teacher, but a terrible place to build a home.
The future will arrive soon enough.
The only place I can truly live is today.
So I’ve made peace with the present.
I no longer chase potential.
I value consistency.
I no longer feel the need to convince people of my worth.
I simply pay attention to how they treat me.
I’ve also learned that not every situation deserves a reaction.
Some things are better observed than argued.
These days…
I sit back quietly.
I watch.
I listen.
And if something no longer aligns with the life I’m building or the peace I’ve found…
I quietly excuse myself.
Not out of anger.
Not out of pride.
But out of wisdom.
My priorities have changed.
Peace has become more valuable than proving a point.
Presence has become more important than perfection.
And joy has become something I choose instead of something I wait for.
I’ve discovered that happiness isn’t found in finally arriving somewhere.
It’s found in appreciating where God has me today.
Because the woman I once hoped to become…
Is quietly becoming the woman God has been shaping all along.
And that…
Is a promise worth keeping.
