Are We Shaped More by Our Experiences… or by Who We Are?
I don’t think the answer is as simple as choosing one or the other.
I believe we’re shaped by both.
Life has a way of placing each of us in situations we never asked for.
Some experiences bring joy.
Others bring heartbreak.
Some leave us celebrating.
Others leave us wondering how we’ll ever move forward.
Those moments change us.
But I also believe there is something deeper at work.
Two people can walk through the exact same storm and come away with completely different perspectives.
One becomes bitter.
The other becomes compassionate.
One closes their heart.
The other learns to love more deeply.
The experience may have been the same.
The response was different.
Perhaps that’s because our experiences don’t just shape us.
They reveal us.
They uncover the character that has been quietly developing beneath the surface all along.
I’ve learned that adversity has a way of exposing what comfort often conceals.
It reveals our fears.
Our faith.
Our resilience.
Our priorities.
It shows us where we still need healing and where God is still doing His work.
When I look back over my own life, I don’t believe I would be the person I am today without the experiences I’ve walked through.
Divorce taught me compassion.
Grief taught me gratitude.
Illness taught me dependence on God.
Loss taught me that what truly matters cannot be measured by possessions.
Those experiences shaped me.
But they also revealed the person God was patiently forming all along.
Maybe that’s how life works.
Our experiences become the chisel.
God is the Master Craftsman.
And little by little, He uses both joy and hardship to shape us into the people He created us to be.
So if I had to answer the question…
I would say we’re shaped by our experiences.
But ultimately…
We’re defined by what we choose to become because of them.
