Who are you most inspired by?

For me, it’s Vanessa Williams.

In 1984, she became the first Black woman to be crowned Miss America.

For the first time, I saw someone who looked like me standing on a stage the world had once said wasn’t meant for us.

She made history.

Her journey didn’t unfold the way anyone expected. Her reign ended early, and many people thought that would be the end of her story.

Instead…

It became the beginning.

She didn’t allow one chapter to define the rest of her life.

She built an extraordinary career as a singer, actress, author, and businesswoman, proving that setbacks don’t have to become permanent labels.

She taught me one of life’s greatest lessons:

When life gives you lemons…

Make lemonade.

Years later, she became one of the last portraits I painted in art class. Looking back, I realize I wasn’t just painting a beautiful woman—I was painting resilience.

Her story reminds me that your greatest disappointment doesn’t have to be your final destination.

Sometimes the chapter you wish had never happened becomes the one that prepares you for everything that follows.
