There is a hard reality about life that is often more bitter than sweet.

One day, our lives will be reduced to old photographs, handwritten recipes tucked away in a box, well-worn Bibles with notes in the margins, and a handful of treasured keepsakes that tell the story of who we were.

When we begin this journey called life, we rarely think about the ending.

We’re busy building careers, raising children, chasing dreams, paying bills, and making plans for tomorrow.

We live as though there will always be another holiday…
another phone call…
another family gathering.

Until one day…

there isn’t.

The truth is, one day everything we own will belong to someone else.

Some things will be cherished.

Some things will be donated.

Some things will quietly find their way to the curb…
as though they never mattered at all.

It is a humbling thought.

But perhaps that is the point.

Our greatest legacy was never meant to be what we accumulated.

It is found in the lives we touched…
the love we gave…
the forgiveness we extended…
the faith we lived…
and the memories we created.

My grandmother once spoke of a sadness that stayed with her—the realization that everyone she entered this world with was gone.

Years later…

I remember my great-grandmother saying those same words.

As a little girl, I couldn’t fully understand what they meant.

Now…

I do.

There is both a blessing and a burden in growing old.

The blessing is watching generations come after you.

The burden is saying goodbye to the generations who came before you.

Some parents experience the unimaginable pain of burying a child.

Some children must one day bury the parents who first taught them how to love.

There is beauty in the ashes.

But there are also tears.

Both can exist at the same time.

So while you can…

Stay a little longer.

Make the phone call.

Write down Grandma’s recipes.

Ask your parents about their childhood.

Listen to the stories you’ve heard a hundred times…

because one day you’ll wish you could hear them just once more.

Take the pictures.

Sit around the table.

Laugh a little louder.

Love a little deeper.

Whether your family is the one you were born into or the one you’ve built along the way…

treasure them.

Because in the end…

life isn’t measured by the things we leave behind.

It’s measured by the love that remains in the hearts of those we leave behind.

Then I’d end with this, because I think it’s even stronger:

**Between every birth date and every final date is a small dash.
It looks insignificant on a headstone…
but it contains an entire lifetime.

That dash holds every laugh, every tear, every sacrifice, every prayer, every act of kindness, every goodbye, every ordinary Tuesday that became someone’s favorite memory.

Make the most of the dash.

Because one day…
the memories you create today
will become someone else’s treasured keepsakes tomorrow.**
