What Children Learn From What We Tolerate
by Valrelyn
⸻
What children learn
from what we tolerate…
is louder than anything we will ever say.
They are always watching.
Not just how we love—
but what we allow.
⸻
They learn:
That it’s okay to be unhappy.
That silence is safer than speaking.
That their voice doesn’t matter.
That having an opinion is dangerous.
They learn how to shrink…
before they ever learn how to become.
⸻
They learn to hide.
Bruises—
whether physical or emotional—
covered behind smiles,
explained away with excuses,
buried under “we’re fine.”
⸻
But the truth is…
It’s not okay.
⸻
It’s not okay to live unseen.
It’s not okay to feel unheard.
It’s not okay to believe love requires suffering.
And somewhere along the way,
that lesson gets passed down—
not by words…
but by example.
⸻
So let me say this clearly—
for the child who watched,
and the adult they became:
You matter.
Your voice matters.
Your peace matters.
Your safety matters.
⸻
If mama tolerated it…
If daddy accepted it…
That was their story.
Not your standard.
⸻
There were reasons they stayed.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
Survival.
Maybe they didn’t know how to leave.
Maybe they weren’t ready.
Maybe they didn’t believe they deserved more.
⸻
But you?
You get to choose differently.
⸻
You don’t have to inherit silence.
You don’t have to normalize pain.
You don’t have to call survival “love.”
⸻
You are allowed to want more.
You are allowed to expect more.
You are allowed to walk away from anything
that asks you to disappear.
⸻
Because healing doesn’t just happen
when we break cycles…
It happens when we refuse
to pass them down.
