Into to Linda season

Introduction to the Series

There are journeys we prepare for in life.

And then there are journeys that quietly arrive —

unannounced, unfamiliar, and sacred to those who have walked them before us.

I now find myself traveling one of those roads.

A road I have never walked.

Little did I know that when I once wrote a piece on dementia titled “The Living Dead: A Daughter’s Long Goodbye,” that one day I would be writing my own story.

My mother’s story.

Our story.

And yet, even in the uncertainty, there is beauty.

Because I know that God will walk me through whatever lies ahead.

So I will choose to embrace this season as it unfolds.

I understand that the road will not always be easy.

But there is also something profoundly sacred about watching your parents grow older — a gift that many people never receive.

Some gifts in life are not immediately appreciated.

My mother always told me something I never forgot.

She would say,

“Make the gift wrap and the bow beautiful when you give a gift, because presentation is everything — just in case they don’t like what’s inside.”

I think about those words often now.

Because this gift I have been given was presented beautifully.

And even if the contents inside are not what I would have chosen…

I will still appreciate the gift.

Because it is wrapped in time.

In love.

In memories.

And in the privilege of walking beside her —

one moment at a time.
